Cultural Interactions in the Medieval Subcaucasian Region: Historiographical and art-historical Perspectives
🔶 The Interaction of Objects, Images, and Bodies with Built and Natural Spaces in Medieval Georgia
The objective of the project Cultural Interactions in the Medieval Subcacasian Regionis to investigate exchanges and interactions between the medieval cultures of present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia (The project, which is financially supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Czech Government, has been running since January 2021). The aim is to give a decisive impetus to an already important, but still largely marginalised region in the field of art history, to contribute to the protection of outstanding medieval monuments, and to promote an alternative perspective on European, Mediterranean, and West Asian cultural histories.
Within the framework of this project we will undertake a research trip to Svaneti from September 5 to September 15, 2022, in the aim toinvestigate the dynamics whereby objects and images interact visually and performatively with both the artificial space of church interiors and the natural environment surrounding built structures.
📌We will discuss these experiences scientifically at a conference to be held at Chubinashvili Institute on September 16, 2022.
